Standard Motif Plate – Precise Contours for Your Most Beautiful Moments

Our standard motif plate is the ideal introduction to the world of 3D light art.
Each piece is individually manufactured in our workshop in Hürth – built up layer by layer, manually inspected, and perfectly matched to your LED frame.

In light, the plate fully reveals its strengths:
clear contours, strong light-dark contrasts, and impressive depth.

Technical Details

  • Manufacturing: FDM 3D printing with a 0.4 mm nozzle
  • Print time: approx. 8.5 to 10 hours (depending on motif)
  • Material: High-quality PLA based on renewable raw materials (corn starch-based)
  • Appearance: strong contrasts, precise lines, vibrant depth effect

The typical structure of 3D printing remains subtly visible upon closer inspection – a characteristic quality feature that underscores the technical charm of each light artwork.

What motifs are suitable for the standard motif plate?

The 0.4 mm version is particularly strong with:

Which lithophane is right for me?

FAQ

Which motif is suitable for which version?

Not every photo works equally well in every way. Here's our recommendation for the best results:

  • Monochrome Lithophane: This variant is an all-rounder. It is excellent for almost all images, as it brings out details very finely through pure light modulation.
  • Color Lithophane: Here you achieve the best results with large motifs that have a strong contrast to the background. Images with too much detail or low contrast can get lost in the color representation.

How do the colors in colored lithophanes come about?

Our color lithophanes are produced using the so-called CMYW process (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, White).

  • The process: The color layers are printed on top of each other horizontally.
  • The effect: The final color tones only emerge when light shines through all layers simultaneously. This physical superimposition of colors allows us to achieve a lifelike color image.

Why does the monochrome image appear sharper?

Sharpness largely depends on the print orientation:

  • Monochrome (Standing): Printed upright. With a layer height of only 0.1 mm, extremely fine gradations and sharp edges are achieved.
  • Color (Lying): Printed flat to precisely stack the CMYW (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, White) color layers. Since light must pass through several color layers here, contours often appear softer or slightly blurred due to the design.

The solution for fine details: Our HD option

If you have a colored motif with many intricate objects or fine details, you can choose the HD variant.

The difference lies in the tool:

  • Standard Version: We use a nozzle with a 0.4 mm diameter. This is the standard for solid, high-contrast motifs.
  • HD Version: We use an ultra-fine 0.2 mm nozzle. This allows details to be reproduced much more precisely. The "blurring" that can occur with the 0.4 mm nozzle is minimized here.

Does the HD board fit into my existing frame?

Yes. Our principle of full compatibility also applies here:

  • The outer dimensions of the motif plate remain absolutely identical.
  • You can reorder an HD motif plate at any time and insert it into your existing standard frame. An upgrade to HD therefore does not require a new frame.

What do I do with old motif plates that I don't like anymore?

Tastes change, or perhaps an old design simply no longer fits the current decor. With us, these plates don't end up in the household waste.

I offer to take back any design plate purchased from me free of charge.

  • How it works: If you no longer want a plate, simply send me a short email. You can then send the plate to me.
  • The cycle: I collect these plates and pass them on in bulk to my recycling partner. There, they are shredded and processed into new filament.
  • What comes of it? Even if I don't receive the material directly 1:1 as exactly the same roll, I source recycled filament from this supplier. I then use this, for example, for matboards or other internal projects.

Zero waste: Through this system, we ensure that no valuable raw material is lost. Your old design plate thus becomes the basis for something new.

What happens if my photo is not suitable for printing?

You don't have to be a professional photographer to order from us. We don't simply "blindly" run any image through the printer.

Every photo undergoes a personal technical check:

  • Manual Review: I personally inspect every uploaded image before the printing process begins.
  • Suitability Check: I check the contrast, brightness, and level of detail with regard to the selected variant (monochrome, color, or HD).
  • Consultation Guarantee: Should an image not be suitable for the desired process (e.g., too dark or too little contrast for a color motif), I will not simply start printing. I will personally consult with you to discuss the result or, if necessary, request an alternative photo.

Your Advantage: You won't receive a product you're ultimately unhappy with. If there are technical concerns, we'll clarify them together beforehand.
